President's Message:

January/February 2006

Happy New Year to all our readers and Society Members! I would like to thank all who were able to attend our December meeting at which our new oficers were nominated and elected. your Board will do its best to guide this organization during the coming days and with your interests in mind. i would like to take a few moments right now to mention some things which are of interest to my heart:

* VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER! VOLUNTEER! Please seriously consider this request. I have had the opportunity to spend time this past year with some terrific people who volunteered their precious time to carry out some much-needed Society projects. We often learned together what needed to get done and how to get it right. It felt good, and we believe we made a diffeence. Please seek out people who are trying to make our group successful and help them with our goals - especially in the area of LIBRARY DUTY & PUBLICATIONS.

* BRING A FRIEND TO OUR MEETINGS! You see, without "new" volunteers, we will burn out. If we want to improve our Society , one sure-fire way is to bring in new personalities with new ways of doing things. Everyone should expect to bring at least two new "potential members" to visit with us during this year's meetings. You must "talk it up" before they show up and introduce them to other attendees, or they may not feel comfortable with us at the end. New members are what keep our Society vibrant.

* PAY YOUR DUES IN A TIMELY FASHION! It's OK to forget at the first meeting, but not by the second one. 'Nuff on that subject.

* I am personally honored to be able to serve as your Society president. A feature in the August 12, 1929 issue of the Columbia Missourian was written about my great-grandfather, who, at the time, was known far and wide for his study and recordkeeping of the migratory routes of birds in Central Missouri. he and his family lived just down the hill from where the BCHS museum is now located. In the article he was identified as the current chairman of the Boone County Historical Society. I am sure he took this position seriously by studying and preserving the rich heritage of Boone County and its surrounding counties. I say all this to assure you that I, too, take my charge seriously. We will have a lot of fun this year, but we must also work hard for the benefit of all our members. I will expect the very best effort from all our excellent volunteer Board members in the fulfillment of their duties. i will do everything I can to support them and you in making this the best genealogy group that we can. Please let me, or any Board member, know of your concerns and suggestions at any time during the coming year. Have a safe and profitable 2006. Happy hunting!

Bob Caldwell, GSCM President
